Armory Building – Adaptive Re-Use California Science Center/LAUSD

Abutted by Frank Gehry’s Aerospace Museum to the south and facing the Rose Garden to the west, the historic Armory is now linked to the new elementary school by Morphosis Architects on Exposition Boulevard to the north. The school is part of a joint project with the California Science Center and includes reuse of the Armory for a science learning center and offices.  The original entry stair that had been buried and severely damaged under a platform for the 1984 Olympics was uncovered and reconstructed with matching patterns and materials.   Kaplan Chen Kaplan provided a historic materials survey along with repair drawings and specifications for the Armory and assisted in obtaining approvals from the State Office of Historic Preservation for the proposed new architecture. We provided construction phase monitoring including submittal and site review.
