Spring Street Stationer’s Tower, Los Angeles

A new residential tower is proposed for downtown Los Angeles located in the Spring Street National Register Historic District. The empty site is flanked by the landmark Spring Street Arcade on the south and Alexandria Hotel on the north. Kaplan Chen Kaplan has designed a curvilinear tapering tower above a base of office shops and parking to fit within the historic setting. A key design element in the District is the configuration of the lower floors topped with a major cornice to create a lower base that includes ground floor storefronts. We similarly echoed these divisions in development of the new building’s base. The 449 units in the fifty-four floor residential tower are served by the recreation level located above parking.
