Biological Sciences Building California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA

The proposed laboratory building was the initial conceptual design by CalTech for a new campus axis to parallel the original Bertram Goodhue designed campus. The research building was designed to include the latest innovations, such as large open laboratory bays and shared support spaces, while respecting the rich traditions of Caltech’s historic campus buildings. Using traditional elements, such as arcaded walkways, large simple openings, and special tile details, we designed a modern building sympathetic to its surroundings. The building shapes the long edge of the new linear campus green, but with a break in its massing, also creates an intermediary courtyard space. Internally, offices and meeting spaces are laid out to provide maximum interaction among researchers. A large lecture hall and animal facility are also included in this 100,000 square foot building.
